Viareggio Carnival

The carnival of Viareggio is the most important and spectacular of its kind in Tuscany , and among one of the most famous in Europe. The avenues running along the sea in this town of Versilia are hosts to a procession of great allegoric floats made out of papermache which move together with the big group Masquerades, each consisting of eight elements about three meters tall. The Carnival Foundation awards a prize to the best float in each category and to the most beautiful big group masquerade. On each float there is a masquerade of 200 elements and a group of a minimum of 10 musicians. A team of 20-30 people work the movements of the figures on the floats. From the 1970's onward, a dominant allegoric theme has been that of political satire which works side by side with fantastic and evasive themes. The floats are made throughout the year in the Carnival Citadel , an important structure inaugurated in December 2001.The carnival museum resides here. The procession of the floats is not the only attraction at the Carnival of Viareggio: at night, the festivities continue in the streets of the town's quarters which fill up with people in fancy dress and music into the small hours. There are also many parties in clubs and pubs and other cultural and amusing initiatives such as the "Pop song festival".

Lucca Comics and Games

Lucca is quite rightly considered the Italian capital for comics. Since 1966, Lucca has hosted the most important national event called "Lucca Comics and Games", an exhibition of international comics, illustrations, animation and intelligent games. During the Lucca comics event, the most interesting global innovations are exhibited, and particular attention is given to developments in the multimedia world (from a certain point of view, comics, which tell stories using text and image, are also included in multimedia communications) and informatics.Along with the exhibitions comics enthusiasts are offered a great show and market spreading over 8700 squared metres in the sports centre. There they can buy, sell and exchange rare and not so rare comics. Meetings with artists and round tables complete the programme for this event.2010 edition "Quattro giorni di pace, fumetti e giochi" (Four days of Peace, Comics and Games) is dedicated to the Beat Generation."Lucca Comics& Games" is promoted by Lucca Town Council and is supported by the Ministery for heritage and cultural activities.

LuccAutori

The aim of LuccaAutori is to let the authors meet the readers in a friendly and informal way. In the "Incontri letterari" ("Literary meetings"), that take place in suggestive places within the walls of Lucca, new books by important poets and writers are presented to the public in open debates, chaired by journalists and experts. LuccAutori was created by Demetrio Brandi, journalist and sociologist, and it is run with the patronage of the Town Council and the Province of Lucca. In 2002 an interesting innovation came about: the contest "Racconti nella rete" (stories in the net). The contest gives new authors the opportunity to let know their works using in a intelligent way the new technologies. The stories are published in the LuccAutori website www.raccontinellarete.it, and the readers vote the ones they prefer. The first authors are then presented during the "Incontri letterari", together with famous authors. Their stories are published in the LuccAutori anthology.Among the novelties of this edition, the collaboration with Fondazione Tobino, the sponsorship of Rai Nuovi Media, Sistema Letterario, Scuola Holden, and the production of a short film linked to the prize "Raccorti nella rete" (in collaboration with MYmovies and Scuola di Cinema Immagina).
